About this data measure

  • Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) includes unexpected outcomes of labor and delivery that result in significant short- or long-term consequences to a woman’s health. (Source: CDC)
     
  • In 2018, Rhode Island had the 8th highest severe maternal morbidity rate in the nation, compared to 49 reporting U.S jurisdictions (including D.C.). Ranking data for more recent data will be provided once available.
  • In 2023, the rate of severe maternal morbidity was higher among Black and Hispanic Rhode Islanders, as well as those with public health insurance, compared to those with private insurance.
