Transportation costs as a percent of income for renters

About this data measure

  • While housing costs are the single largest expense for most households, when combined with transportation costs, they account for approximately half of the average U.S. household budget. Reliable and affordable transportation helps connect individuals with healthcare services, healthy foods, and job opportunities.
  • In 2016 Rhode Island was the 11th ranked state for the affordability of transportation, though affordability and access are not synonymous, and more recent data are needed to track progress in this area.
  • Transportation affordability is also a Rhode Island Health Equity Measure.
